Work in Progress Summer Studios

So during the summer we get access to the studio spaces, which means we can experiment with our work and try out new things.

I have been recently using my MRI images to inspire my work.  These have mostly been fairly small pieces.

I have been exploring going bigger, making a piece that is life-size.

MRI Scan Work

I had a MRI scan in January 2018 and these work in progress pieces are based on images from those scans. The fabric was heat press dye printed with an image of the MRI scan.  The fabric was layered, cut and embellished to emphasise the image.

Kidney Amyloids

Kidney Amyloids

When I visited the National Amyloidosis Centre in November 2017 I was able to obtain some images of the Amyloids in my kidneys. This has led to a number of pieces of work based on these images.

The first pieces copied the microscopic image on the left, kidney amyloids 1. Fabric was collaged onto transfer dyed felt using an embellisher. Hand embroidery was used to emphasise the amyloids.

Then I used a portion of the image on the right kidney amyloids 2 to create these pieces of work which show an individual amyloid in the glomerulus of my kidney.

Amyloid 1 was made using printed layers of chiffon which were cut to expose lower layers. The piece was embellished and stitched.

Amyloid 2 was made from cotton printed with an ink jet printer. Reverse appliqué  techniques and embroidery were used to highlight parts of the image

Studio space for the Summer

So this week we were able to move into our studio spaces for the summer. I am looking forward to creating lots of new work.

Digital Images of Spine Lesion

These images were taken from a MRI scan of my spine which show a lesion on the lumber spine. The image hue has been manipulated in Photoshop

Digital Images From Leg Scan

These are some of my latest digital manipulations from the CT-PET scan of my legs.

The image is a cross section that has been layered with the hue and saturation altered.

These images will be used for a textile piece.

Work in Progress

Working on a new piece of work. Lots of hand stitching.

Experimenting with Print

I’ve been spending time exploring a new technique for making work. This has been acid etching to make prints of my images.  I have enjoyed the scientific approach to creating etchings but I still have issues with making clean prints. It also removes the possibility of lots of colour in the work.

The Cellular etch was made by coating the plate with masking varnish and then dripping meths onto the plate to remove the varnish in an interesting way.
